The phrase “it takes a village” has become a ubiquitous part of our cultural lexicon. But for Mom’s House for Children (MHFC), it’s more than a slogan. It’s a way of life.
Rooted in the traditions of tight-knit communities across Africa, the village ethos speaks to something essential about the human experience. A child is not raised by two hands, but by many. And a village is defined not by lines on a map, but by the people who choose to be present for one another, transcending distance for a greater good.
Building on Collective Strength
Since 2020, Mom’s House for Children (MHFC) has worked alongside communities across Africa and the Amazon, partnering with local leaders to support orphaned and vulnerable children. In these places, the village is not an idea—it’s active. Care is shared. Responsibility is collective. People step in where they’re needed. Systems here are strong but often under-resourced.
Yet much of the world seems to have lost touch with this timeless wisdom. Rugged individualism has replaced the proverbial village, shaped and rewarded by the logic of modern capitalism. In the NGO space, this shows up as quick-fix aid models that breed dependence rather than empowerment and funding sources that chase short-term metrics over the slow, relational work of lasting change.
This past year has made the stakes painfully clear: when support is pulled on political whim, the cost is carried by the people least able to absorb it.
A Blossom in Spring: Rhythms of Love
But just as the earth softens and seeds split open each spring, a restorative balance is emerging. This season marks a new chapter for MHFC—not a reinvention but rather a blossoming expansion. The village already exists. Our work is to strengthen it. Here’s how:
In 2025, we launched Rhythms of Love (ROL)—a new arm of MHFC dedicated to funding our work directly. By partnering with world-renowned artists, ROL hosts ticketed music events, connecting global audiences to the MHFC story.
It’s a model that turns joyful celebration into tangible change, with every gathering directly funding clean water projects, nutrition programs, and educational initiatives in MHFC’s partner communities.
Instead of relying solely on grants or donations, ROL creates a steady stream of capital that can keep pace with the everyday needs of the children we work with. What happens on a dance floor in one part of the world will translate into projects that communities can rely on.
Empowering the Village, Together
Looking ahead to 2026, MHFC is preparing to open its first Dream Center in Somerset, Mpumalanga. The space is designed to be practical and durable, featuring administrative offices, a kitchen, bathrooms, a baby room, a sick bay, storage, and classrooms built for different age groups.
There’s also a central meeting space that doubles as a community hub, allowing local organizations to run programs and offer services directly. The goal isn’t to build a standalone facility. It’s to create infrastructure the community can use and adapt over time.
Additionally, we are working towards setting up a clean water system in Peru in time for Nueve de Octubre.
As MHFC steps into this next phase, we invite you to:
• Attend or sponsor a Rhythms of Love event.
• Contribute directly to the Dream Center build.
• Share this with someone who should be involved.
